Your Cat Has Declared the Freshly Unpacked Back-to-School Supplies Her New Bed

By V. Nakamura

  • satire

This is satire, although the cat will be treating it as binding property law. The back-to-school supplies have arrived: crisp notebooks, a packet of pens still in its little plastic armor, folders in colors chosen under the delusion that color coding will save the semester. Your cat has inspected this shipment and identified its highest purpose. It is not education. It is a bed with exceptional rustling, sharp corners, and a built-in audience.

The Declaration of Academic Squatting

The process begins before you have found the scissors. You place the cardboard box on the floor for one minute, because you are a person who believes in recycling, and the cat enters immediately. This is reconnaissance. She is not interested in the box itself, not yet. She is looking past it, toward the soft pencil case, the stack of graph paper, the backpack lying open with its tags still attached. By the time you remove the first spiral notebook, she has chosen the four-inch strip of tissue paper beneath it as her permanent residence.

Do not make the amateur error of moving her and then arranging the supplies more carefully. This simply tells her that the materials are valuable. Valuable materials must be sat on. A cat who ignored the dining chair all summer will now sleep with one hip on a geometry set and one paw inside a lunch bag because you looked briefly pleased with the purchase.

Approved Bedding Materials, According to the Department of Feline Procurement

The National Institute for Household Cat Logistics, an entirely fictional agency with an alarming annual stationery budget, recognizes five premium academic sleep surfaces. They are ranked not by softness but by their ability to interrupt a human task at the exact moment it becomes organized.

  1. The open backpack. The cat must lie directly on the item required tomorrow, preferably after it has been placed in the backpack twice.
  2. A stack of new notebooks. Spiral binding creates a surface that looks uncomfortable to every person and therefore must be excellent.
  3. The crinkly clear wrapper from a pack of folders. This is less a bed than an acoustic announcement that the cat is rearranging herself at 2:13 a.m.
  4. A pencil case with a zipper. It is small, tubular, and capable of rolling away at the moment the cat commits her full body weight.
  5. The single worksheet you printed after discovering the printer still contains enough black ink to produce one document of historic importance.

For best results, leave the supplies in a shallow cardboard tray for 18 minutes. This is enough time for the cat to adopt the configuration as ancestral territory and enough time for you to discover that she has applied a light but meaningful layer of fur to every dark-blue folder. The fur will not damage the folders. It will, however, appear in every first-day photograph with the composure of a deliberate design feature.

A Practical Containment Plan That Will Be Ignored With Dignity

There are things worth doing, even though none of them constitutes a legally enforceable boundary. Put pens, pencil sharpeners, erasers, small clips, and other rollable objects into a lidded plastic bin as soon as they come out of the package. Use one with a hinged lid rather than a loose lid, because loose lids are an invitation to a midnight percussion program. Keep scissors and other sharp supplies in a closed drawer or securely latched container rather than trusting the top of a desk. Close the backpack when packing is done. This does not prevent the cat from lying on it; it merely prevents her from conducting a full inventory audit inside it.

For the inevitable desk occupation, give the cat a more honest alternative: a low-sided corrugated cardboard scratcher or a washable felt basket placed beside the unpacking area. Put a folded cotton towel in it, not a thick plush bed that will be ignored in favor of a three-millimeter sheet of packing paper. This is not a rule about cats. Some will accept the basket immediately; some will look at it as if it contains a letter from the tax authority. The point is to provide a place that is safe, easy to vacuum around, and not directly on tomorrow’s labeled binders.

The 6 A.M. Backpack Inspection

At 6 a.m., when the household has exactly four minutes and no spare emotional range, the cat may become urgently interested in the backpack. This is because bags are most compelling when they are closed, time-sensitive, and being lifted. Do not negotiate with a cat at the front door. Put the packed bag on a chair, hook, or shelf overnight if that is workable in your home, and keep a lint roller near the exit. Ten minutes of packing the night before is less glamorous than a last-minute search for a permission slip beneath a sleeping animal, but it is a system built for real life rather than for the optimistic version of you who bought matching labels.

Use a reusable lint roller with a covered storage case, or a rubber-bristle hand brush for the backpack exterior and upholstered chair. Spend two minutes on it before the first day, not 20 seconds while wearing shoes and holding coffee. If the bag is machine-washable, follow its care label; if it is not, a damp microfiber cloth is usually the less dramatic tool. Avoid turning the whole episode into a chemical operation. School supplies already come with enough odors, coatings, and mysterious adhesive residue without adding an all-purpose perfume fog to the room.

The Furniture Will Also Enroll

The supplies are only the opening ceremony. Once the cat establishes that the dining table is an administrative campus, she may expand into the chair where homework happens. A tightly woven canvas or microfiber chair cover is easier to shake out and wash than a loose throw that slides off every time somebody stands up. If the chair has exposed wood arms, a small removable sisal scratching panel placed nearby may redirect some attention, though it will not persuade every cat and should not be marketed to yourself as diplomacy.

Keep one shallow tray for the active school project. At the end of the evening, pencils go in the tray, papers go in a folder, and the tray goes into a cabinet or onto a high shelf. This is not because the cat is plotting against algebra. It is because an ordinary home has moving bodies, open doors, laundry piles, dinner, fatigue, and one animal who can turn a ruler into a hockey stick without apparent preparation.

The Final Finding

The cat has not ruined back-to-school season. She has correctly noticed that it produces warm laps, open containers, new textures, people sitting still on the floor, and a great deal of attention directed at objects that are not her. The house will contain fur on the folders, pencil shavings in a place nobody can explain, and a backpack that needs to be closed before bedtime. But the true observation is this: the things you use every day need a home, because otherwise the cat will give them one.
