SATIRE: Guests Arrive to Find the Home Has Been Redecorated in Golden Retriever
By C. Hernández
- satire
This is satire, although the lint roller in the foyer is not. Welcome to the Golden Retriever Home Redecoration Program, a whole-house design approach in which every surface receives a soft, sunlit coating of dog before company arrives. The effect is less “lived-in home” and more “an expensive oatmeal-colored textile installation has become emotionally attached to tennis balls.” Guests should understand that the dog did not make a mess. The dog has established a palette.
The official color story: Warm Dog, With Accents of More Dog
The first principle is commitment. A Golden Retriever does not shed in isolated incidents; it distributes material across your home with the calm administrative reach of a small government agency. The sofa gets a fine halo. The baseboards get drifts. The black sweater you put on five minutes before the doorbell becomes a high-contrast before-and-after photograph. There is also, somehow, hair in the refrigerator, despite the dog having never been invited to conduct inventory there.
Do not fight the design concept with one tiny lint roller purchased at a pharmacy checkout. That device is a ceremonial object, suitable for removing exactly three hairs from one guest’s knee before surrendering. Buy a reusable lint brush with a fabric collection chamber for upholstery and clothes, plus a pack of refill sheets for the car and entryway. Keep a rubber squeegee or silicone pet-hair broom for rugs: five slow minutes of pulling in one direction can raise a frankly accusatory amount of undercoat. This is not cleaning. This is revealing the original rug.
The guest-ready protocol, or: create the illusion of a civilization
When guests text, “We’re about 20 minutes away,” begin the standard Golden Retriever hosting sequence. Do not use those 20 minutes to apologize to the dog, who is asleep in the exact middle of the only clear walking path. Use them as follows:
- Spend 4 minutes with a cordless vacuum or vacuum attachment on the sofa seat, the guest chair, and the rug directly in front of both. Ignore the rest of the house. Your guests cannot sit on the rest of the house.
- Spend 3 minutes wiping obvious nose prints from the glass door with a microfiber cloth and a pet-safe surface cleaner used according to its label. The door will immediately resemble a small child has been studying weather systems against it, but at least it will be fresh evidence.
- Spend 2 minutes collecting toys into a washable canvas bin. Leave one toy out. A home with a dog should look inhabited, not like the dog was placed in off-site storage pending inspection.
- Spend 5 minutes putting a washable throw over the sofa’s preferred dog zone. Choose tightly woven cotton canvas, microfiber, or a quilted furniture cover rather than a loose knit blanket, which will collect hair with the efficiency of an archaeological dig.
- Spend 6 minutes locating the dog’s damp, possibly fragrant item—rope toy, bed, towel, unidentified plush animal—and moving it to the laundry room with the discretion normally reserved for sensitive documents.
Furniture choices for people who would like to own furniture past Thursday
The Golden Retriever renovation favors practical finishes. If you are buying once instead of three times, look for a sofa with tightly woven upholstery, removable cushion covers where possible, and a color that meets the dog halfway: medium taupe, camel, heathered gray, or a patterned weave. Pale cream is not forbidden; it is simply an active collaboration with destiny. Very dark velvet is also allowed if you enjoy seeing every individual hair presented in museum lighting.
For floors, a low-pile synthetic rug with a nonslip pad is easier to vacuum than a shag rug engineered from seven thousand narrow hiding places. Put a coir or rubber-backed mat at the exterior door and another washable mat just inside it. The goal is not to defeat mud. Mud has legal standing here. The goal is to give it two opportunities to resign before reaching the clean laundry.
How to explain the smell without issuing a press release
A guest may notice that the house has a warm, outdoorsy note: raincoat, tennis ball, faint lake, old blanket, and whatever optimism smells like after it has rolled in something. Do not respond by lighting six heavily scented candles and converting the living room into a boutique called Pineapple Verdict. Wash the dog bedding regularly, launder throws, empty the vacuum canister, and ventilate the room for 10 minutes before people arrive. If the odor changes suddenly, becomes strong, or comes with changes in your dog’s skin, ears, appetite, energy, or behavior, that is not a home-fragrance problem; call your vet.
The ceremonial entrance
Then comes the arrival. The door opens. Your guest has brought wine, flowers, or a cautious hope that their trousers will remain trousers. The Golden Retriever appears at full speed, carrying a stuffed duck by one wing and an expression of astonishment that other humans have somehow discovered the address. There will be leaning. There may be a toy presentation. There may be a single majestic shake that redistributes the home’s signature fibers over everyone equally, which is the closest thing this household has to universal public policy.
You can keep a basket with a lint roller, spare slippers, a towel, and a sealed container of treats near the entry if it helps the evening run more smoothly. But do not stage-manage the place into a showroom. The scratched floor, the covered sofa corner, and the bowl beside the cabinet say something true: a house used by an animal will show it. The trick is not making it look untouched. The trick is making it work well enough that everybody, including the dog, has somewhere to sit.
